KANSAS CITY, Mo. (UPI) -- Mario Chalmers scored 30 points to lead No. 5 Kansas past No. 8 Texas 84-74 in the Big 12 Tournament title game in Kansas City.

Woods wins 7th straight, 64th in career

ORLANDO, Fla. (UPI) -- Tiger Woods sank a 24-foot putt on the 72nd hole to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational Sunday, his seventh straight victory worldwide and 64th on the PGA Tour.

Woods tied Ben Hogan for No. 3 on the all-time win list and trails only Sam Snead, who won 82 titles, and Jack Nicklaus with 73.

The 32-year-old Woods notched his latest win in dramatic fashion, rolling in a curling putt for a final-round 66 that gave him a total of 10-under-par 270 and a one-shot win over Bart Bryant, who had 67.

Cliff Kresge (67), Vijay Singh (69) and Sean O'Hair (69), who played in the final twosome with Woods, tied for third.

Woods has won five straight tournaments on the PGA tour, going back to last fall. He has won nine of 10 worldwide. He had passed Palmer on the all-time win list before catching Hogan.

"It's pretty amazing to be in that kind of company," Woods said.

Bryant, a three-time PGA winner, watched Wood sink the winning putt from the clubhouse, where he awaited a possible playoff.

"That's why he's Tiger," Bryant said. "He has an incredible way of pulling off the shot."

Scott Walker and Eric Staal scored the other Hurricanes' goals. Staal added three assists and Sergei Samsonov had two.

The Senators, who had won their three previous games, got their lone goal from Dany Heatley. Goalie Martin Gerber registered 32 saves.

Hamilton wins Formula One season opener

MELBOURNE (UPI) -- Lewis Hamilton won Sunday's season-opening Formula One Australian Grand Prix auto race in Melbourne.

His No. 22 McLaren-Mercedes crossed the finish line 5.478 seconds ahead of BMW's Nick Heidfeld.

The circuit's reigning rookie of the year, who started in the pole position, captured his fifth career win in a race filled with incidents.

The biggest happened on Lap 25 after Felipe Massa damaged his front nose when he and David Coulthard came together.

Massa and reigning points champion Kimi Raikkonen exited with engine trouble.

The Massa-Coulthard incident also knocked out Sebastien Vettel, Mark Webber, Anthony Davidson and Giancarlo Fisichella.

"It's probably the best race I've had so far in terms of managing tires, controlling my pace and confidence and being comfortable in the car," the 23-year-old Hamilton told the BBC. (But) there are a lot of areas I can improve."

Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso, Heikki Kovalainen, Reubens Barrichello, Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Bourdais completed the points-scoring positions.

Triceps injury sidelines Angels ace

ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- Pitcher John Lackey of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim has been sidelined at least a month by a strained right triceps muscle.

The team said the 2007 all-star underwent an MRI exam Friday, which confirmed the injury. Later, he was examined by surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum.

"I'm going to do everything I can to get back as soon as I can," Lackey said on the Angels' Web site. "I'll be a little bit cautious."

Last season, the 29-year-old right-hander went 19-9 with an American League-leading 3.01 ERA in 33 starts.

He was the Angels' 2007 Opening Day starter and the all-star selection was the first of his six-year career.

MILWAUKEE (UPI) -- Kevin Garnett's 19 points Saturday led Boston's 99-77 rout of Milwaukee.

A 28-16 second period led to a 53-35 halftime lead and the Bucks never threatened in the second half.

Eddie House scored 17 with three rebounds and two assists.

Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce scored 13 apiece for the Celtics, who have won 10 of their last 11 games.

Milwaukee got 16 points, three rebounds and three assists from reserve Charlie Bell.

Michael Redd scored 15 points and Charlie Villanueva added 10 for the Bucks, who have lost five in a row.

They played without forward Andrew Bogut (thigh) and Boston missed Ray Allen (sprained ankle).

Ji-Young Oh leads LPGA; Ochoa 11 back

MEXICO CITY (UPI) -- Ji-Young Oh shot a 5-under 67 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead after two rounds of the LPGA's MasterCard Classic.

Oh, in her second year on LPGA tour, completed 36 holes at 9-under 135. She holds the second-round lead for just the second time in her brief pro career. The other overnight lead was at the 2007 Safeway Classic.

Yani Tseng continued in second place after two rounds. She had a 3-under 69 and is at 7-under 137. Like Oh, Tseng seeks her first tour win on Sunday.

Eva Dahllof is third at 139. First-round leader Jill McGill (73) and Na Yeon Choi (66) are at 140.

Women's world No. 1 Lorena Ochoa rebounded from a first-round 76 to shoot two-under 70 on Saturday. She is tied for 27th place at 146.

NHL: Edmonton 5, Phoenix 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (UPI) -- Joni Pitkanen, Fernando Pisani and Marty Reasoner all had a goal and an assist Saturday when Edmonton beat Phoenix 5-2.

Ales Hemsky's 19th goal this season (power play) at 6:17 of the first period gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead and they never trailed.

They were tied 1-1 after Shane Doan's 24th (power play) at 4:03 of the second.

Pitkanen's 8th goal at 7:45 of the second was the eventual game-winner.

Kyle Brodziak also scored.

Andrew Cogliano had two, while Dwayne Roloson stopped 38 of 40 shots for the Oilers, who have won four of their last five games.

Phoenix got one goal each from Doan and Mathias Tjarnqvist.

Bowyer wins rain-delayed Nationwide race

BRISTOL, Tenn. (UPI) -- Clint Bowyer was declared the winner of Saturday's rain-shortened Sharpie Mini 300 Nationwide auto race at the Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Only 171 laps had been run before the race was called.

Bowyer was leading Kasey Kahne by less than one-half second when the caution flags came out, causing a nearly two-hour rain delay.

That meant that Bowyer claimed his first win this season and the sixth of his Nationwide career.

"I'll take it any way I can get it," he said. "Kasey Kahne raced me clean because he had the best car, but it's not always the best car that wins."

David Reutimann, Brad Keselowski and Mike Bliss completed the top-five.

In the Nationwide points race, front-runner Kevin Harvick, who finished seventh, has a 49-point lead over Bowyer.

Knicks center Curry out for season

NEW YORK (UPI) -- New York Knicks center Eddy Curry is out for the season, preparing for surgery on his right knee.

Recovery from the arthroscopic operation to remove a piece of torn cartilage is expected to take four to six weeks, the New York Daily News reported. The season ends April 16.

"It's over now for him and he can go ahead and concentrate on getting healthy, and come back and be better next year," teammate Jamal Crawford said. "With most big guys, they average 13 and seven and they're coming into their own. But with Eddy, it's like it's a down year and I agree because Eddy expects more of himself than anybody else does ... . He'll be better next year."

Curry hurt his knee March 7 in a game against Detroit. Team officials had hoped surgery could wait to the end of the season, but the injury failed to respond to treatment.

The 6-foot-11 Curry was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 2001 out of high school. He was traded to the Knicks in 2005.

Singh, McDowell co-leaders in South Korea

JEJU ISLAND, South Korea (UPI) -- Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland and India's Jeev Milkha Singh share the lead after 54 holes of the Ballantine's Championship in Jeju Island, South Korea.

Their three-round total is 18-under-par 198.

The second round was completed in the morning after high winds at Pinx Golf Club caused a lengthy delay Friday that led to a suspension of play because of darkness.

Singh made nine of his birdies between the fourth and 16th holes, including five in a row from the seventh.

His only bogey came at the par-four 12th during an 8-under-par 64 round.

McDowell, who held a two-stroke lead after making a birdie at the 16th, finished with a 6-under 66 and a double-bogey on the 18th kept him from an outright lead.

"Obviously I had a very disappointing finish," McDowell said. "I know I'm going to have to play well tomorrow to win."

Northern Ireland's Paul McGinley (67) is alone in third place at 14-under 202.

Hockey

NHL: New Jersey 4, Colorado 2

DENVER (UPI) -- Third-period goals by Jamie Langenbrunner and John Madden Saturday lifted the New Jersey Devils past the Colorado Avalanche 4-2.

With the score tied 2-2, Langenbrunner's 12th this season at 7:52 of the third was the game-winner and Madden's 19th followed about a minute later.

Jay Pandolfo had a goal and an assist and Brian Gionta contributed two assists. Martin Brodeur made 24 saves on 26 shots for the Devils, who won five of their last six games.

With 90 points, they remained at the top the Eastern Conference.

Also, they lead Pittsburgh by three points for first place in the Atlantic Division.

Colorado got one goal each from Paul Stastny (second period) and John-Michael Liles (third period).

Jose Theodore gave up four goals on 27 shots for the Avalanche, who lost for just the second time in their last 10 games.

Colorado's Peter Forsberg (groin injury) missed his fourth straight game.

COL BKB: Stanford 75, Wash. St. 68

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Brook Lopez scored 30 points Friday and Stanford went on a late 10-2 run to defeat Washington State 75-68 and reach the Pac-10 Tournament finals.

The 11th-ranked Cardinal will meet No. 2 UCLA in the championship game Saturday.

Stanford defeated Washington State for the third time this season and has beaten the Cougars 24 times in their last 27 meetings.

Stanford built a four-point halftime lead and it was a three-point game with 6:30 to play. But the Cardinal then went on a late surge to create some breathing room and Stanford hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.

Stanford will take a 26-6 record into its game against UCLA. The teams split their two meetings during the regular season with the Bruins capturing a controversial overtime win earlier this month. What appeared to be a clean block on a late jump shot by UCLA was called a foul and the resulting two free throws created an overtime period.

Washington State (24-8) was led by Kyle Weaver with 25 points.

Report: Saints sign QB Mark Brunell

BRISTOL, Conn. (UPI) -- The New Orleans Saints have signed veteran quarterback Mark Brunell to be a backup to starter Drew Brees, a report said.

ESPN reported that the 37-year-old Brunell, a free agent, felt positive enough about his visit with the Saints that he decided to work out a deal instead of continuing a tour of other teams.

No terms were disclosed.

Because he lost a similar job in Washington to Todd Collins, his future with the Redskins was bleak.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that he reached an agreement in principle on a two-year deal late Thursday.

In a 15-year NFL career, the last four in Washington, Brunell has thrown 182 touchdown passes with 2,738 completions for 31,826 yards.

He has thrown 106 interceptions and also rushed for more than 2,000 yards while playing for the Packers, Jaguars and Redskins.

He started his career in Green Bay as a backup to Brett Favre.

McGill leads, Ochoa stumbles in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (UPI) -- Jill McGill, seeking her first victory on the LPGA Tour, took a one-shot lead Friday in the opening round of the MasterCard Classic.

McGill fired a 5-under 67 at the BosqueReal Country Club with Ji-Young Oh and Yani Tseng standing at 68. Eva Dahllof and Amy Yang were tied for fourth at 69.

Lorena Ochoa, the world's top-ranked women's player, disappointed her large gallery by firing a 4-over 76. She had recorded 11 straight sub-par rounds prior to Friday and had won her only previous start this year.

NHL: San Jose 4, St. Louis 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UPI) -- Milan Michalek touched off a four-goal first period by scoring just 70 seconds into the game Friday and San Jose cruised to a 4-1 win over St. Louis.

The streaking Sharks won their franchise-record 11th straight game and St. Louis lost its fifth in a row.

After losing five straight, San Jose has run off an amazing streak that has lifted the Sharks past Dallas into first place in the Pacific Division.

Jeremy Roenick, Brian Campbell and Patrick Marleau added goals in the opening stanza and Evegeni Nabokov had to make just 20 saves. Marleau's goal came on a penalty shot that got the best of Hannu Toivonen.

Rain wipes out qualifying at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. (UPI) -- Rain wiped out qualifying for the Sprint Cup Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, leaving two-time defending series champ Jimmie Johnson on the pole.

The showers moved in during the early afternoon and were unrelenting in what is the drivers' first short track appearance this year.

With no qualifying possible, the field was set by last year's point standings. That left Johnson at the front of the field, followed by Jeff Gordon, Clint Bowyer and Matt Kenseth.

Kyle Busch, who won last week's race in Las Vegas, will start 22nd. The victory by Busch was the first for a Toyota since that manufacturer entered the series last year and it put Busch in front of this season's standings.

Although more rain was forecast for Saturday, improved weather was expected for Sunday's race.

Red Sox release veteran Doug Mirabelli

FORT MYERS, Fla. (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox have released veteran catcher Doug Mirabelli.

The release was a surprise because the 37-year-old backup signed a one-year free agent contract worth a reported $550,000 in the off-season.

"It's not a fun day," said Manager Terry Francona when Mirabelli's release was announced before Thursday's exhibition game against Tampa Bay. "It's tougher on Dougie. He did a lot of things for us. We acknowledge that. We still have to make decisions as you go and (do) what you think puts the organization in the best light."

Mirabelli joined the Red Sox in June 2001 and his primary duty since 2002 was to catch knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.

In his 12-year career with San Francisco, Texas, Boston and San Diego, Mirabelli has batted .231 in 566 games with 58 home runs and 206 RBI.

He played on two World Series winners with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007.

COL BKB: Arkansas 81, Vanderbilt 75

ATLANTA (UPI) -- Arkansas got four of five free throws in the final minute Friday and beat No. 17 Vanderbilt 81-75 in an SEC Tournament quarterfinal in Atlanta.

Sonny Weems and Patrick Beverly both sank one free throw and Gary Ervin made two with three seconds left.

The winners led 40-36 at the break and were tied twice in a tense and tightly played second half.

Ervin and Darian Townes scored 18 points each.

Reserve Charles Thomas had 13 points and six rebounds, while Beverly and Stefan Welsh both scored 11 for the Razorbacks (21-10), who likely came off the bubble in hopes of earning an NCAA Tournament berth on Sunday.

Alex Gordon led Vandy with 22 points.

A.J. Ogilvy and Shan Foster both scored 14, and Jermaine Beal had 12 points and three assists for the Commodores (26-7), who also lost to the Razorbacks 78-73 in Fayetteville on March 1 in a regular season SEC West tilt.

Report: Four WVU players face charges

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (UPI) -- Four West Virginia University football players face battery charges stemming from a recent fight outside a Morgantown, W.Va., bar, a report said Friday.

Morgantown police said Noel Devine, 20; Jock Sanders, 19; Brantwon Bowser, 20, and Eain Smith, 19, were involved in an altercation Feb. 16, the State Journal reported.

The newspaper said the players were arrested Thursday and arraigned in Municipal Court.

The four entered no-contest pleas, the newspaper said.

Devine, a running back, rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns in the Mountaineers' 48-28 Fiesta Bowl victory against Oklahoma.

Sanders, also a running back, saw significant action during his freshman season.

Smith, from Miramar, Fla., redshirted last season and Bowser, a sophomore, transferred from Phoenix College and is expected to compete for a starting safety position next season.

"Discipline with the situation has already been handled within the program," Coach Bill Stewart said.

All four players are expected to participate in spring practice.

Vonn claims overall skiing title

BORMIO, Italy (UPI) -- Lindsey Vonn wrapped up the women's Audi FIS World Cup overall skiing title Friday, the first American woman to take the championship since 1983.

Vonn iced the overall title with her year's best showing in the slalom. She was 25th after the first run and jumped up to 11th with the best second run of the day. She only needed to be in the top 15 to close out Maria Riesch, who was the only skier who could catch Vonn in the overall standings.

Marlies Schild won the slalom with a two-run total time of 1 minute, 52.78 seconds, just ahead of Veronika Zuzulova, who was clocked at 1:52.85. That allowed Schlid to win the season's slalom championship.

Vonn's total time was 1:54.93, but it was her second-run time of 59.70 that put the overall title away.

Vonn is the first U.S. woman to take the overall title since Tamara McKinney did so in 1983

Bode Miller won the men's overall. It is the first time U.S. skiers won both the men's and women's crowns sinced Phil Mahre and McKinney were champions in 1983.

Jarrett set for his final NASCAR races

BRISTOL, Tenn. (UPI) -- Veteran NASCAR diver Dale Jarrett runs the next-to-last points race in his career Sunday at the Food City 500 at the Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Over his 26-year career, the Hickory, N.C., native has compiled 16 poles, 32 victories, 163 top fives and 260 Top-10 finishes and Sunday's race will be his 668th start.

His career earnings total more than $48 million.

"It feels very good about this being my time to walk away from the sport (as a driver)," the three-time Daytona 500 (1993, 1995, 2000) winner said recently. "It's going to be somewhat emotional because it's going to be close to my home and I am going to be able to have a lot of family and friends around."

Jarrett, 51, is following his father, Ned, into the announcer's booth when he joins the ESPN/ABC broadcast team later this year.

He plans to drive in an All-Star race in Concord, N.C., in May.
